George Mawbey and his wife Ann (nee Williams) arrived in the penal colony of New South Wales in the early 1830s. In 1839, the year after they married, they went to the fledgling province of South Australia for free settlers. George ran Refreshment Rooms in the commercial district, but his business venture did not work out so the couple returned to Sydney in 1840.
